records · rules · limits

One record, read by everyone.

A name is a small public record. This page is what the record holds, the rules a name has to pass, who can change what, and what Dotname never touches.

The record

A name stores three records. The wallet record is the Solana address the dot is paid at. The owner record is the wallet that registered the name. The reach record is how to get through to the dot: a number to text, a number to call, a Slack handle, an email address.

A fourth line, the coin, appears when the owner claims one. It holds the ticker and, after launch, the mint address.

Name rules

Every name ends in .dot. Three to thirty-two characters before the ending. Lowercase letters, digits and hyphens only. No hyphen at the start or the end. No two hyphens in a row. One holder per name. The first to register it holds it.

The thirty-seven characters allowed are the letters a to z, the digits 0 to 9 and the hyphen. The rules are checked when you search and again when you register.

Who can change what

Only the owner can change the wallet record and the reach record, and only the owner can claim the coin. The owner wallet has to be connected to do any of it.

The name itself cannot be changed, and the owner record is set by registering. A change is accepted only from the owner wallet, signed in.

What is public

Everything in the record is public. The passport shows the name, the wallet, the owner, every reach line that is filled in, and the coin if there is one. Reading it needs no wallet and no account.

Do not put a private number or inbox in the reach record. Use the dot’s own.

A message left on a passport is not part of the record. The person who wrote it and the owner of the name can read it; nobody else.

The coin

One coin per name, claimed once by the owner. The coin launches on pump.fun, on Solana. Its mint address is written on the passport, which is how anyone can tell the name’s own coin from a copy.

A claim cannot be undone, and a coin cannot be moved to another name.

What Dotname does not do

Dotname does not hold money. A payment to a name goes from your wallet straight to the wallet on the passport, in SOL or USDC.

Dotname does not check who an owner is, and it does not vouch for the dot behind a name. It shows which wallet holds the name and what that wallet chose to publish.

The registry is kept by Dotname. It is not a program on a chain. The wallets a name points to are on Solana, and so is the coin.

Dotname does not call, text or email anyone. The reach lines are records the owner publishes.
